Captain Jennings Carroll Burton Sr.
Peacefully, in the home he loved, on the shores of the Yeocomico River, Captain Jennings Carroll Burton Sr., 90, of Kinsale, Virginia, went to be with the Lord, on July 29, 2013.
Jennings was born April 4, 1923, in Northumberland County, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents; Benjamin Carroll Burton and Elizabeth Myrle “Lizzie” Dawson Burton. He was also predeceased by two brothers, and one daughter; Emory Burton, Leonard Elliott Burton, and Judith Melba Burton. Jennings is survived by his wife of 70 years, Doris “Skippy” King Burton, two siblings; Ellsworth Burton and Thelma Burton Swann, two sons; Jennings Carroll “Bo” Burton Jr. (Nancy), Ben Burton (Diane); four daughters, Beverly Hamrick (A.W), Jeannie Volante, Susie Burton and JoAnne Burton. He had thirteen grandchildren; Paul Burton, Nikki Italiano, Mike Burton (Cindi), Steve Burton, Sarah France (Shawn), Derek Richards, Ricky Volante, Kyle Volante, Will Burton, Zach Burton, Ryan Prescott, Hannah Burton, Nick Burton, and seven great-grandchildren; Brian Burton, Emily Burton, Katie Burton, Ashleigh Burton, Kaylee Burton, Rylie Burton and Declan France.
Jennings was called into the Marines in October 1943, during WWII. He returned home February, 1946.
He was a full time, self employed waterman for over seventy years. He was the captain of many boats, but better recognized for the Estelle Leonard, and the Bogue Sound, both of which were oyster buy boats, and the last two of their kind operated on the Chesapeake Bay.
He was well known in the community for providing fresh steamed crabs. He loved family gatherings, which included food and fellowship. He especially loved going out to dinner with his wife Skippy.
His many hobbies included gardening, making crab pots, and watching the Redskins and the Nationals. He also enjoyed weekly visits and phone calls from his close friends and fellow watermen.
He will truly be missed by his family, friends and loved ones. A Memorial Service and Celebration of his life will be held at their home in Kinsale on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 with a service to follow.

Robert McDonald Brann
Robert McDonald Brann, 89, of Village and Deltaville, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2013. He owned and operated Village Seed Service for more than 30 years and was a member and deacon of Gibeon Baptist Church.
Robert is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marguerite Clark Brann; daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Allen Harrow of Deltaville; brother and sister-in-law, Ralph R. and Helen Brann of Village and three granddaughters, Lauren, Lindsay, and Leigh Harrow of Deltaville. Robert was preceded in death by his father W. Taylor Brann and mother Lillie Crossley Brann; sisters Viola Edwards Elsey and Ethel Pruitt Brown and brothers Wilmot Taylor and Edward Lee Brann.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 26, 2013 at Gibeon Baptist Church with burial following in the Gibeon Baptist Church Cemetery, Village. The family received friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday at Gibeon Baptist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gibeon Baptist Church – General Fund, P.O. Box 23, Village, VA 22570.
Mrs. Alda Jane Hale Hughes
Mrs. Alda Jane Hale Hughes, 91, of Village, widow of Grayson Harrison Hughes, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Oswald K. & Clara Virginia Straughan Hale, a member of Bethany Baptist Church and a retired bookkeeper for Warren J. Courtney & Son.
Survivors are her son, William H. Hughes (Nancy) of Callao; her daughter, Virginia Mae Jett (Jimmie); five grandchildren, Scott, Chris, Stephanie, Stacie, and Abby and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Bethany Baptist Church with interment Gibeon Baptist Church Cemetery. The Reverend Kori Kiss and the Reverend G.C. Harbuck officiated. Pallbearers were Chris Jett, Scott Jett, William Brann, John Robert Lewis, Abby Hughes, Dennis Headley, William Hughes, and Jimmie Jett.
