James Lee Gaster
James Lee Gaster, 75, of Reedville died February 9, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Mary J. Gaster; two daughters, Jamie Gaster and Christy Gaster, both of North Carolina; two step-children, Carl Lee and family of Reedville and Tina Cridlin and family of Richmond; two sisters, Mary Strother and Trudy Waters of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Ashley Lee, Bonnie Lee, Esaw Aleman, Omar Aleman and Jacob Cridlin.
Visitation was February 12 from 10-11 a.m. with funeral service at Faulkner Family Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial was at Fairfields Baptist Church Cemetery, Burgess.
Wade Hampton Hudson
Wade Hampton Hudson, Jr. , 91, of Westmoreland County, Va., formerly of Roanoke, died February 8, 2013. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen Louise Richardson Hudson, and his son, Michael Wayne “Buddy” Hudson.
After retiring from Roanoke Gas Company he returned to his birthplace in Acorn. He was Past Master of Melrose Lodge #139 AF&AM, Roanoke and Westmoreland Lodge #212 AF&AM, Kinsale. He was also Past Patron of Hillcrest Chapter #159, Roanoke and King Carter Chapter #5, Kilmarnock (formerly Betty Lewis Chapter #107, Kinsale) Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are his daughter, Mary Hudson Gross and husband Jerry; grandsons, Michael Wayne Hudson, Jr. and wife Lori, and Thomas Wade Hudson; great- grandson, William Ryan Hudson; great-granddaughter, Kasey Elizabeth Hudson; special friend, companion and caregiver, Marie Suthard; and caregiver, Glen Hockaday. Deepest appreciation is extended to the staff and nurses at The Orchard and Riverside Hospice, for their kindness and excellent care.
Visitation was held at Welch Funeral Home, Marks Chapel, Warsaw on February 11, 2013 with a Masonic service afterward led by Westmoreland Lodge #212 AF &AM. A graveside service followed at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with Reverend DeWayne A. Duncan and Reverend Gerald Smith officiating.
Lawrence J. “Sam” Spruell
Lawrence J. “Sam” Spruell, 87, of Hanover, died February 6, 2013. He was a lifetime resident and honorary mayor of Pearson Island, in Richmond County, Virginia. Survivors include his son, Larry Spruell; his daughter, Jennifer Ferguson and her husband, Dale; two grandchildren, Joe and Emily Spruell; and two great-grandchildren. Sam was a true American hero, having served in the Army and Navy. He was one of the few remaining surviving veterans of World War II. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Atlee Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 9271 Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service.
