Home to five artisan guilds, the historic Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern Foundation in Heathsville turned up the volume and the heat in entertainment, food and artisans wares in their first Oyster and Art Fest on Saturday, October 10 under their “big top” tent.
Oyster aficionados had their choice of oysters prepared four ways by the recently opened Tavern Restaurant. Sliders, on the half shell, fried and charbroiled oysters headlined the offerings along with fish & chips and burgers.
Members of the Artisan’s Trail of the Northern Neck displayed their wares for the crowd in the Heritage Arts Center at the Tavern while “The Articles,” a spicy band from Richmond entertained the diners under the “big top” tent.
Ken Kauffman, a local smithy, demonstrated metal hook fabrication at the forge. While pounding slender red hot round metal rods into square shapes on an anvil, he also displayed a well-honed sense of humor about his craft.
