The following is from Smith Point Sea Rescue:
Smith Point Sea Rescue, hosts of the Reedville Fishing Derby, announced that this year’s Derby was the last they will offer. While the Derby has operated for 31 years, participation has steadily declined in recent years.
At its high point in the 90’s entries were limited to the first 500 boats with a waiting list. As the first derby of its kind on the Bay it ran for 3 days and it was limited to bluefish.
In 2014, fewer than 50 boats participated. “We’re sorry to see a tradition like the Derby die,” said Andy Kauders, current president of the Smith Point Sea Rescue. “But there simply isn’t enough interest to continue with so few participants.”
