Knights Run Road in Northumberland and Antioch Road in Westmoreland are expected to reopen between April 8 – 12. Both were damaged during Tropical Storm Michael and have been closed since October.
Knights Run Road
Knights Run Road, which carries about 800 vehicles a day, was originally projected to reopen in mid-March. Virginia Department of Transportation pushed the date to April 1-5 to allow additional time for paving, but wasn’t able to meet that target either.
The delays with this project are partially due to difficulty getting the necessary asphalt during the winter. But “asphalt plants have begun to reopen for the spring season and we are in the process of obtaining the materials we need to pave,” Beau Hoyt, P.E., VDOT Area Construction Engineer said in a statement late last month.
Crews made excellent progress grading the road over the past two weeks to prepare for paving but, “weather conditions further postponed work several days,” said Kelly Hannon, Communications Director at VDOT Fredericksburg district. As of Friday April 5, the road was over 99 percent complete but it will require additional work days with dry conditions to allow crews to finish up with the fresh asphalt.
