While most of their fellow students were likely still sleeping in, the members of the Northumberland Cross Country team along with Coach Eddie Barnes and numerous other community members were hitting the track bright and early on Saturday morning. Beginning at 6 a.m. the group gathered at the high school’s track for an all day run-a-thon event to raise money for the Northumberland Chapter of the American Red Cross. For weeks prior to the event, participants worked hard to raise money and find sponsers for the event. Some individuals managed to get pledges that would increase with every lap ran while others ran as much as possible for a set amount.
The day was filled with fun for all and featured a bake sale, bingo, meals from the concession stand and raffles. Coach Barnes noted that many local businesses and organizations had been very generous in donating raffle items for the event.
The Red Cross also had their booth set up and ready to give information to all who were interested.
At about the midpoint of the event Coach Barnes was holding the lead for most laps at 50 laps with several of his team members close behind hip. Overall an impressive total of 711 laps were completed by all of those that participated. Cross country team member Kendra O’Malley ran the most laps with a total of 72. By the conclusion of the event at 6 p.m., Barnes himself had racked up an impressive 74 laps.
The raffle event will be extended to this coming weekend in order to allow for more participation.
Coach Barnes would like to thank all the business sponsors, persons who took part in the Run for Life, fun run; those who supported us by way of buying baked goods, raffles and those who have given pledges.
