Northumberland Elementary School won a prestigious recognition from the state school board last week. The school was one of 51 schools across the state awarded the 2019 Highest Achievement Award. It was the only school on the Northern Neck so recognized.
The award requires that a school have at least a 70 percent pass rate on Standards of Learning math and science tests and a 75 percent pass rate on SoL reading and writing tests. Perhaps more importantly, to win the award, a school must have no more than a five percent gap between the lowest and highest score among the school’s student groups if it has but two such groups and 10 percent if it has more. Groups include black students, white students, Hispanic and other student groups.
