Northumberland County will have a new sheriff next year. Toward the end of last week, Sheriff James R. “Doc” Lyons notified people who had strongly supported him when he ran for office in 2015 that he was not going to run for re-election.
Monday, April 8, Lyons said he had written the 25 supporters because they deserved a personal message after the way they supported him.
Lyons, who started his working life as a hospital administrator in Galax before joining the State Police, had retired from the State Police prior to running for Sheriff. He had spent 11 years as a road trooper and the balance of his career as an agent for the Bureau of Investigation. He has lived in Northumberland County since 1989 and said he has no thought of moving although he and his wife do have a number of things they’d like to do once he is fully retired.
