The Northumberland varsity girls’ softball team started off last week strong with a 5-1 victory over Mathews at home on Tuesday, and although they fared well against Nandua on Thursdaym a last-inning two-out home run gave the Lady Warriors a 7-5 win over the Indians.
Tuesday, against one of the better teams that the Indians will again face this season, Head Coach Allison Cockrell said that he team “played really well.” Mary Katherine Hall was on the mound for the seven innings, allowing two hits and one earned run, striking out one batter and issuing no walks. With only one strikeout, the Lady Blue Devils will hitting Hall’s pitches, but Cockrell said that her team “played really good defense behind her.”
Northumberland got onto the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the first when Macey Augst drove Hall in after she hit safely. Two more players scored in the second inning;Sarah Haynie walked, Hannah Walker reached on an error, Jillian Jett’s sacrifice drove in a run and July Traylor drove in the second score. In the fifth inning, two more Indian runners crossed the plate, Connor Haislip singled, Kaci Payne was safe on an error and Augst drove in both runners. Augst was one-for-three with three RBIs, Haislip was one-for-three and scored a run and Hall was one-for-three with a run scored.
