Softball team gets big win before rain

The Northumberland Lady Indians varsity softball team celebrated Senior Night with a 4-0 win over 2A W&L here on Tuesday.

It was Lexy Newsome going all the way getting her 250th career strike out and holding W&L scoreless for the seven inning game.

The game was actually closer than the 4-0 score would indicate with both teams threatening to plate runs throughout the entire contest. Northumberland struck in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Kyndal Dawson doubled to ignite a four run rally. Dawson had started the sixth inning rally against Essex that gave the Indians that game. Hannah Stout singled to score Dawson and the race for the plate was on.

Macey Augst beat out an infield hit, Morgan Wilson then doubled to score both Stout and Augst. Wilson scored the fourth and final run on a single by Lexy Newsome.

W&L threatened in the second inning when they loaded the bases with no outs. A pop fly; then Newsome struck out the next two batters, recording her two hundred and fiftieth for her career.

Next week is the final week of the regular season and schedules will be flexible as the Indians attempt to get in the three remaining games.

The JV ladies beat the rain storm getting in two games last week.

At W&L on Tuesday they won 18-3 but Wednesday lost their first game of their season, 5-4 in an eight inning game at Rappahannock (Warsaw).
