Before the season began, Coach Allison Cockrell said that her girls were going to have to step it up a notch in their level of competition.
And step it up they did.
The Northumberland Lady Indians captured third in the prestigious Sports Backers Plus Tourney in Richmond this past Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, the Lady Indians opened with a 1-0 victory over Central of Lunenburg. They then topped Dinwiddle, 2-1.
On Saturday, the Lady Indians lost their opening game to eventual tournament winner Park View of South Hill, 10-0. They rebounded with a 10-1 win over Essex.
Friday’s opener was an eight-inning game in which the Indians’ Hannah Walker scored from a second base on a July Traylor single in the bottom of the inning.
Mary Kathryn Hall was the pitcher, allowing just four hits and recording 12 strikeouts.
