Every year about this time, Northumberland High School holds its spring sports awards ceremony. This year was no different as team members, coaches, parents and fans all came together in the school auditorium last Tuesday. Dr. Travis Bums opened the ceremony and drew a standing ovation when he suggested the high school track and stadium be named for retiring, from teaching, Eddie Barnes.
The big question of the spring event was the selection by the coaching staff of the female and male athlete of the year. For the 2016-2017 athletic year the recipients were well received by those in attendance. Chosen for the female athlete was Trinity Bea and for the male it was Damonte Thornton. Both were three sport participants this year. Bea in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. Thornton in football, basketball and soccer.
Baseball led off the presentation with the JV coach, Quame Green saying they had a 9-13 season after starting 1-6. The varsity record for the season was 8-1, according to Coach Johnny Mothershead.
Making the all-academic conference team with a 3.4 GPA or better were Bowe Rogers, Blake Edwards, Nick Basye, Zack Swift, Lucas Smith, Christian Headley, Tyler Deitz, Thomas Bingham, Jason Smith and Brian Harris.
