Northumberland’s Christopher “Caleb” Davis went to Virginia High School League Class 1 State Wrestling Championships with a 35-1 record for the 2018-2019 season. When the final whistle had blown and the last winner’s hand had been raised, Davis, senior, had finished high school career with a 38-2 year record and third place in the 170 weight class for all Group 1 schools within the State of Virginia.
Davis took his first match by a pin over Jacob Maxfield. Due to his overall record this season, Davis advanced to the state semi-finals where he lost to returning state champion, Derek Endicott from Grundy. Endicott repeated as state champion again this year. The loss dropped Davis into the bracket to compete for third. He won his first match here with a 10-3 decision over Kemond Roger from Franklin. For third place, Davis had to face Gary Pearl III from Northampton in a rematch of their Region 1A championship match which Pearl had won the week before. But it wasn’t going to happen two times as Davis prevailed by a 5-2 score for the third place medal.
