For more than 30 Christmases, Santa has had some special helpers looking out for children in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. Every year, the folks at radio stations WRAR and WNNT work hard to provide a joyful Christmas morning to area families in need through their Christmas Wishes drive, which involves collecting donations of money, toys, and clothing; shopping for other items; and getting this all done well ahead of time, so they arrive under the tree before the big day.
The hub of all this activity is WRAR/WNNT’s office on Prince Street in Tappahannock. Planning begins in September, well before most people even start thinking about the Holidays. Terri Brooks, office manager and one of the stations’ current owners, works with departments of social services in each of the seven counties that are a part of their primary listening area: King & Queen, Essex, Middlesex, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland. The departments anonymously share children’s needs and wishes, and Brooks gives them a name to be read on-air.
