‘You gotta have a fiddle in the band’

The singing group Alabama had a hit song based on the observation, “If you’re gonna play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band.” Well, most of the band at the Rappahannock Concert Association’s concert Saturday night was fiddlers.

The concert by the Quebe Sisters consisted of the three sisters, all on fiddles, backed up by guitarist Simon Stipp and standing bassist Daniel Parr, and was primarily fiddle music and songs sung by the sisters.

The sisters play what they call “progressive, western swing.” The music has plenty of San Antonio Rose sounds but every so often veers off in sounds from pieces such as “The St. James Infirmary Blues,” and “The Wabash Cannonball,” in the latter of which Parr squeezes a realistic train whistle moan from his bass.
